Make Your Roses Last Longer
January 11, 2017
Roses have been the preferred flowers since ancient times. Thanks to their remarkable beauty and delightful fragrance, they have earned their place among all the beautiful flowers that nature offers us.
When expressing feelings and pleasing a loved one, roses are the top choice. For this reason, they are frequently given on their own or as part of beautiful floral arrangements. Unfortunately, roses are not eternal; as soon as they are cut, they begin to wilt. The good news is that if you care for them properly, you can make them last up to 10 days. Here is how:
Steps to make roses last longer.
- The way they are cut influences how long roses last. Ideally, they should be cut in the early morning hours before the temperature begins to rise. They should also be cut at a 45-degree angle.
When buying pre-cut roses, we have no way of controlling these factors, so it is advisable to purchase them from trusted establishments with experience in floral arrangements, where we can be sure that the roses are handled properly so they do not wilt quickly.
- The importance of a clean vase for making roses last longer cannot be overstated. A properly cleaned container free of bacteria gives roses the chance to last longer by preventing exposure to bacteria that could make them sick or speed up their aging process. Make sure to thoroughly wash the vase where you will place your fresh roses, especially if you frequently buy flowers.
Also, make sure the vase is the right size, that the stems receive water properly, and that the flowers are not packed too closely together, allowing each one to absorb water equally.
- The ideal water is fresh, at room temperature, and free of bacteria. One way to ensure the water is purified is by adding half a teaspoon of bleach per liter of water. However, you must be very careful, as adding too much bleach can harm your roses. Vinegar is another good option for purification.
- One way to revitalize roses so they last longer is by adding elements to the water that serve as flower food. One of the most commonly used is aspirin; add one tablet to the water containing the flowers. Refined sugar is also used, with one tablespoon added to the water.
- Roses should be kept in a cool place, away from direct light and high temperatures. If you think it is necessary, you can spray them with a little water from a mister.
- It is advisable to carefully remove wilting petals and leaves, exposing the healthy petals to maintain the beauty of the rose.
By following these recommendations, you will make your roses last longer, allowing you to enjoy them for up to 10 days. And if you still wish to preserve them, you can try drying them and keeping a beautiful memento that will last over time.
